Barataria / Grand Isle Report

It has been posted by some folks that there is oil on the bottom of Barataria Bay, evidenced by oil on their anchors.  It has been posted by many that it is probably inaccurate.  I will have to agree with the side of NO OIL on the bottom.

I fished yesterday, launching in Mrytle Grove, and fishing to Elmers' Island.  I made several sets and swa no sign of oil on the anchor, rode, or stirred up from the bottom.

I also bought croakers at Bridgeside and saw the bait boat shortly after he made the dock and the nets were clean as can be.  No sign of oil on the nets or boards.  No unnatural flim or scheen in the marina or in the bait tanks.  I use a closed live bait system and had no problems keep the 100 baits alive.

I did see a light sheen of oil on the predominant tide side of Caminada Pass once the tide started to fall along with a few very small tar balls about the size of dimes.

Cleaned my gear today...no signs of oil, Oh, and I inspect and rinse every foot of my anchor rode after each trip to insure proper windless operation...No sign of oil on 75' of rode, and no oil on water line on hull.

BTY, I did catch several 1-1/2 to 3lb. trout on the Caminada Bar and the Caminada Rocks, ate a few tonight, they were yummy.So...enough of this he said, she said. ARRIVE ALIVE!!!

The LDWF has opened up all the waters around the lower Mississippi River Delta for Recreational Fishing.Great news . However, Patches of our waters remain closed. The area around Isle au Pitre , south , about a 2 mile wide strip remains closed for some crazy reason. I am in that area often fishing around the ridulous closure I referred to above. And as most have said..NO OIL. Those areas have been closed since before the LakeP/Lake Borne panic. I believe that is just a forgotten area, with no politics driving it either way. When one looks at the strip...it is impossible to make sense out of it. check it out. Today, out of pure fustration I sent an e-mail to every commissioner to take a look at that situation.I know our government so I really know it was a waste of time. But I did it anyway.I will be out of town next week so i cannot go to the meeting and tell them in person, thus the e-mail.
I acknowledge it is an area that is ignored by most, has no political capital associated with it and it is in the far reaches of St. Bernard Parish, but it is my hallowed fishing grounds since I was a kid...and I want it back. If anyone else feels as I do , please tell the commissioners. Their e-mail addresses are on the LDWF web site. I cannot believe that the area I refer to is any more contaminated than the areas opened today could have been.... and we all know what has been said about finding contamination..nada.

Fear is a natural reaction. For all of us who love fishing, hunting and Louisiana, fear was our first and normal response. On top of that , the world is full of sharks who see fear and take advantage of it. Most of the significant disinformation was spread by media types who have hidden agendas and financial opportunist who see a way to make a quick buck.

Add politicians, most of whom have nothing but the best of intentions, who had no choice but to reaction strongly to protect their area's interest and to satisfy the outcry from their voters who were both fearful and misinformed. Now you have a toxic mix stronger than any oil spill.

Nothing that has happen is good. There will be damage. Resonable things need to be done to fix the problems. BUT, none of this is the end of the world. The more we let people say it is a disaster or a catastrophy, the more harm we do to our economy. Even more important, the more harm we do to people who make their living on the water, the people who work their ass off to supply the goods and services we need to enjoy the outdoors.

The lesson is to slow down, take a deep breath, think rationally, and research from reliable sources who don't have a dog in the fight.

Go fishing and spend some money with the people who need it.

East of East

Eden Isles, LA USA

Me and my 6 yr old son launched at BSM Wed at 5:15 and headed out to Black Bay with Live shrimp. After trying a few spots we hit a submerged pipe or something right off the eastern tip of the rocks at Stone Island. We were about 50 ft from the boom. So....DON'T GO THERE!!! Luckily for Capt. Christian I had a spare prop because mine was trashed!! What I did't have was my tools, so I had to make do with an ice pick, fishing pliers, and a lot of patience. After I got my spare prop on, we went to the big cut in the long rocks and caught 21 nice trout by 10:30. Moral of story: Always carry a spare prop, tools, and you should have an extra nut, thrust bushing, and cotter pin in case you drop one in the water. We turned a potential disaster into a good trip!

Century Man

Lacombe, LA USA

All this second hand info from us the very ones that love to fish, the very ones that this info gets to the media from, the very ones that hurt the marinas, tackle shops, marina owners etc,

Right after the oil spill I, Steven Nick, (aka Century Man) posted about a large fish kill that my fishing partner told me his best friend had witnessed on a certain day and a few days later another fish kill BoB Marshall from the Times Picayune posted he witnessed by an oyster fisherman a mile long another fish kill,,, you can go to archive my reports to read this....this was not true.... at all....

My point is, I trusted a friend of 20 years who trusted a friend of 30 years  who is very well known in the fishing world that the intel was accurate, instead of not saying a word I got on my favorite site asking questions about it.....

Well first off I NEVER SAW ANY DEAD FISH OR OIL, being I jumped to conclusions trusting people I know very well, I was quickly put into place by many guides who know me well that are out fishing 7 days a week instead of me 3 days a week, who had never seen one fish kill in black bay eloi or the sound nor did they see a drop of oil, I also by my post caused my favorite marina BSM to possibly lose business by my inaccurate post...

So what I did for the next 8 weeks up into my  3rd back surgery 2 days ago, was fish all over launching from hopedale running all the way to baptiste collete in a bay boat, not only did we fill the ice chests every single trip, but I with my own eyes did not see one drop of oil or one dead fish, and I ran everywhere from sweetwater to deadmans from hopedale way past battledorf area again and again,,

In the post I made after the first one I made sure to mention no oil no dead fish and the areas I fished..

So I want to publictly apologize to Glenn Sanchez of BSM, who I care alot about and hope there are no hard feelings, for passing on info that was not true,,,

So people if you do not see something with your own eyes it did not happen and it ain' there.

When you say these things like I did you are not only hurting your own reputation among fisherman but you are hurting the marina owners the charter captains who are still fishing everyday that did not go to work for BP..

So you guys I apologize to BSM and the Hopedale Guides and whoever else my false intel may have hurt, and to you sincerely, Glenn and Karen of BSM and the rest of the people over the years I have come to call my fishing family I am truly sorry...

Please accept my apology publicly, I truly meant no harm and did not realize the harm I may have done..

So to you guys on here saying I heard I heard I heard learn from my mistakes and shut up,

You hurting the very people that wake up at the crack of dawn or earlier to make your next fishing trip the best possible under any circumstance cause even when you cancel your trip because of whatever reason they are still there working and waiting for you to show cause the fish are everywhere, don't let rumors mills hold you from fishing,,, get out there and fish...

To be clear, I do not work for BP or any of its contractors. I am business man that works so I can go hunt and fish. In my younger years I was a deckhand in Venice. I understand the fears associated with this disaster. I am very sympathetic to the plight of the commercial and charter captains. They are being compensated well at this time, but the future is not clear. To be fair, with the current state of the economy, and with the man in charge now, none of our careers are certain. I feel for the drilling engineers and rig workers that have been laid off because of the moratorium. There is no Vessels of Opportunity program for them. Last but not least, the 11 men that died and their families. Life is neither friendly nor fair and there is alot more to life than money. What this world needs most is good people doing the right thing. We have been inundated with a want to take all that we can, because if you don't someone else will. It's the notion that there was only 1 thief in the world, and the rest of us are just trying to get back what was ours that is tearing this country apart. Just an observation. Good luck fishing. The snapper were thick everywhere last week in Ship Shoal. Maybe next year the idiots that call the shots will give us more time to catch them.

With the snapper season being a total bust and the Federal Regulators being so quick to shorten our season this year because we "exceeded" the quota last year, are they going to look at the fraction of quota caught this year and give us another chance this year!  Along with that, are they going to open up the Federal waters to fishing if there is no oil issue and the fish have all been found safe for consumption everywhere I have heard of!

I witnessed no oil in my last trip offshore out of GI. I did hear some speck fisherman say they saw some near the pass at Fourchon. The oil has never been a blanket that spread across all of La, Ms, and Fl. Spill response workers are not finding large masses of oil. Patches of oil washing ashore that extended for miles were rare from the very beginning. Of course the news makes it seem worse than it is because that meakes good TV. We all know that. Find the most devastating images. That's what disaster coverage is all about. Don't listen to the media. Let the scientists do their job, and we'll find out how our fishery is affected in the next year or so. Until then, enjoy it. Go fishing where you can, when you can.

With regards to Shane and your corruption claims, Welcome to America. More specifically, welcome to Louisiana. You know plenty of former guides who are making plenty of money right now. Can you blame them? That's the American way. If someone wants to hand big money to you for doing nothing more than making 1 or 2 boat rides a day, you do it. I know you would rather fish Shane, but you have an opportunity to go make $450 a day if you want it. Deckhands can make $300 a day. Yeah it's a 7 day a week job, but you are working maybe 5 hours out of every day.The contracts are out there. The people with boats are getting those contracts. If you have a Captains license, you have plenty of work available to you. Know anybody that has a 31ft aluminum boat not under contract? If you do, it's because they have plenty of money and would rather keep their boat for fishing this summer. You can't find 30ft+ aluminum boats around here right now. People were smart, saw there was a demand and took advantage of it. Do you think anyone has a problem sticking it to BP? No way. You can bet that all prices negotiated are basically highway robbery. A camp for 60k a month? Are you crazy? It must sleep 200 people. If your friend didn't rent it out, he probably has no need for money. There are just as many local people making rediculous amounts of money as there are non locals. Only we don't mind when it is our own making tons of money. What if you were a heavy equipment renter and someone approached you with an idea to send some into Fl because they just had a terrible storm and needed equipment to help with cleanup. Rates would be 100% higer than what you make locally. Would you feel bad about making tons of money? Does that make you a good ole boy that should burn in hell. Nope, that's free enterprise. Supply and demand. You got the goods, you get the money. My point is this: If you are not making money off of this oil spill, it is because you either don't want to or you lack the willingness and intellectual fortitude to try. Do you think your fellow charter captains that are making tons of money would like to have their names on a list of how much money they make each month right now? Would it be fair if we got a report from BP and all of it's contractors to submit a list of revenue going out to persons with boat and housing contracts? My guess is, you won't find many that are willing to sign off on that kind of info being released.

FISHING REPORT FOR CHRISAKE!

Took a couple of Yankees out for their first taste of Louisiana's best saltwater fishing on Tuesday...

They didn't want to go early so we had the wind/ tide/ heat/ working against us, but we were determined to prevail..

Hit my favorite spot on the rocks on an incoming tide, but the fish had gone deep for cooler weather, so we moved on into the bay where we got on a pretty good bite of a variety of fish.

Nailed about a 10lb sheepshead, some very nice trouts (losing a bunch at the side of the boat due mostly to inexperience) broke off lines with ladyfish, a spinner shark, and I was the catfisher du jour!

Man some of the BIGGEST frigging catfish I've ever caught without trying. They really LOVE the PINK gulps with curly tails.. go figure.

Anyway, we moved over to some of the rigs, but by then the water was getting way choppy, and the fish were being very uncooperative so I asked em if they'd had enough... They gave up.

Breton Sound Marina (Glenn and Karen) were great as usual... Glenn had our bait ready for us when we pulled around, Karen is always cheerful and helpful with maps and suggestions... Those guys are really terrific and seemingly doing quite well under the chaotic circumstances regarding the BP situation down there...

WLF paid us a visit checking fish sizes, life vests a boat paperwork.. make sure your papers are on board, and thank goodness you're NOT in Arizona or it would be illegal for them to even ask you for your papers ???

Anyway, that's my story and I'm sticking with it.
Tomorrow AM I'm headed out with Fishette and Rocketman into lake borne where RM has a line on some BIG gals..

Will post again tomorrow I suppose.

GOOD LUCK TO CENTURYMAN! I hope his surgery went well and he's recovering splendidly... He's a good guy for sure.

Lafitte, LA USA

Quick Lafitte Report

Today Capt.James had Jeremy Holmes, his 6 year old son Grant,Donald and Keith onboard for some speckled trout action.Made the run to the bay and picked up a few before they headed to the beach and found a good trout bite. The guys put a bunch of trout on ice and called it an early day when Grant got too hot.Even though young Grant got hot he was the fisherman of the day landing a very nice bull red.And to top it off while Capt.James was cleaning trout he landed a monster blue cat with the help of dad right by the cleaning table plus a gar.Not as big as the one he caught in Texas but a good size one.Jeremy once again a good trip. Thanks for everything and will see ya soon.

All trout were taken on H&H glow beetles under a cork while fishing the beach.

We have some open days.If you would like to book a trip with Lafittes Most Professional Fishing Team please use our new email address which is captainphil02@cox.net or give us a call at 504-689-2006.

The well is on the east side of waterway about a 1/4 mile inside of mud lake. The waterway is is closed just north of there. You can access Barataria Bay by running through the marsh at Hackberry or by the Myrtle Grove canal.

Shane,

How about this one for an illustration of the ineptness of the whole oil fighting situation.....

Early last week we were returning to LaFrance's marina in Ansley, miss.from a fishing trip to the La. Marsh. 2 BP sponsered workers in a rubber boat hailed us as we approached Herron Bay. They were looking for a place to get fuel for their boat. Hmmmmm, we wonder how they could be that disorganized. They told us that they were domiciled on the boats and jack up rig stationed near Half Moon Island. We then led them to the marina. While there I asked them what they were doing. They said that they were preparing for a crew change..weekly change, and have done NOTHING since they have been on station. They said BP just told them to hang around and they will let them know what to do. Well, the second crew was ready to go out and do more of the same.A couple of weeks of nothing. Pathetic in my opinion. No mission, no plan, no objective. And from all the vessels I saw out near Half Moon, I suggest that more pollution was coming from them than the oil ,which I have not seen by the way.

We walked away from that thinking that one of the biggest long term problems from this oil leak will be the miles of useless booms that will never be picked up and plague us for years.they will be pushed into the marsh, they will be half sunk, fouling outboards, and probably blocking the natural movement of bait which may affect the fish more than the oil has.

I guess there is good things happening in most areas but what I have witnessed in the SE marshes is random booms, placed to accomplish nothing. And I can recognize that since I have been fishing, and looking at water movements in that area since I was 12 years old....and I am now 64 years young.

I think we will make it thru this if the government know nothings, and greed moves away from us and let's us be. As I have said before, Mother Earth will heal itself better than all these polititions and Government losers will ever do. In fact , she will do it dispite them.

Let's go fishing, boating , etc. and forget about all this stuff. I know that I have got to stop worrying about what I cannot control...but I can go fishing!!

Save yourself a lot of trouble and book a trip with a guide. Decide the area that you want to fish/learn and find a guide in that area. If you prefer ask someone on this forum for recommendations.

Hope this helps

100 days and we are all still wondering.
Well if it's up to them they will train us to think different. I just want to say thanks to all the people who never gave up and still realize the oil is still here. The cut backs are coming every day and it does not look good.
BP wants it to look like everything is solved. Let's stick together and raise hell no matter what opinion each of us has. God bless we are all in this and all hate to see the devastation that will come of this disaster.

very concerned

Venice, LA USA

I just watched the 5:30 NBC Nightly news.  Brian Williams said "1/3rd of the fishing grounds closed INDEFINETELY"... which had a graphic of the area 100nm South of Morgan city out to 200nm South of Apalachacola... this is the 1st I have heard of INDEFININATE closures - is this report bogus or do they know something we do not.  This would virtually shut down fishing in all forms offshore from Grand Isle past Penisicola; making Venice fishing only at ~100 miles offshore past the last set of floaters...

What?

I sincerely hope this is media mis-information and hype

To Shane just watched how they will spend the 20billion that BP left on the table this will be a joke. Has anyone now seen all the talk about how the gulf warm waters will clean itself faster than the cold water in Alaska der I posted this many months ago. They are now wondering why the oil is doing away so fast. News media is the best joke in this spill did you see that one bird they had on about a thousand times. How many people did they have on bird clean up to save what is it 115 birds. One group wanted to start a fish saving breeding program because all the fish will be killed off. Then they started on the crabs next the Miami beaches. I will close they also had 3 storms hitting the oil spill and putting oil on Canal Street. O what abut the big fish kills. You can bet the 20 billion will be spend on all these not existing problems.  Again we had a major problem with the freeze in 89 when more birds and fish were killed than I can remember.  Also can remember when raw sewerage was pumped into the lake for years and chemicals came down the Mississippi river that killed off the birds with DDT this to my idea was a lot worse than oil.  PS I know my parents eat the seafood from the lake and river and they all lived to 80 plus.

I agree 100% with you Shane. The stories I hear from some Myrtle Grove people I know made me want to throw up. One of the reasons I moved my boat out of there. It is just beyond my comprehension why BP, etc. would not go to professional fisherman (commercial or guides) first for help. I think corrupt is the only explanation cause no one can be that stupid.

I have had my RV between Sulpher and Hackberry ever since the fishing closed at Grand Isle. I have used Mark with On-Site RV Repair on two occasions and he has taken care of my Air Conditoner problen and roof problems while my RV was parked. Just wanted to advise that if you have problems with your RV while in the area around Calcasieu Lake I would highly recommend Mark at On-Site RV Repair (337)526-7633. Good Luck on the Water.

Put down @ Franklin because the landing @ Burns Point is still closed.  Fished 6:30 to 10:30.  Water was clear and fresh.  Kept a limit of reds, tagged another 10 and released another 4 because I ran out of tags.  Most liked a Minus 1 or a H2O, did not like a gold spoon today.

For anybody that is curious, Corexit was apparently banned only within 3 miles of rocky shorelines in the UK because limpets could not adhere to the rock surface after it was exposed to Corexit because it was too slippery (and limpets, whatever they are, presumably die if they cannot adhere to the rocks).  I have no idea or opinion on what it may be doing to seafood in the Gulf or people that consume it, nor am I defending its use.  But the UK apparently did not issue a blanket ban, nor was the limited ban due to toxicity.

Sunday Lafitte Report:

Had pretty much given up the idea of fishing this past weekend with Bonnie approaching, but when I woke up Sunday morning to clear blue skys and light winds, I said what the hell.  After I got all the house chores and work done, the wife and I headed out to Lafitte about noon.  When we left the weather said North winds at 6 knots, what we really got was south winds at 15 to 20.  We motored down to Round Lake and set up off a point on a canal emptying into the lake.  Thirty mintues later with no bites and the waves kicking up, we moved into the canal into protected waters.  There was a huge grass patch along the bank that we decided to try.  As soon as we anchored (about 2:00), the reds started busting bait all in the grass.  Nice sized reds at that.  I managed to put one nice fat 19 inch red in the boat.  Then proceeded to have 1) fish break line  2)hook pull off of power pro line (wonder who tied the knot on that one) 3) four missed hook ups. The Reds were taking the bait in a funny way.  They would not pull the cork down; rather, they would take the bait and slowly pull it away. YOu could tell because the cork was moving against the tide.  I kept thinking maybe crabs, but as soon as you set the hook (or tried to) it was definitely a Red.

I should have had a limit, unfortunately operator error limited me to one fish in the boat.  Probably would have caught more if we could have gotten our bait into the grass where the fish were, as we were fishing on the outskirts of the grass line.  Guess I should have thrown a spoon, but with Wife comfortably on the front deck sunbathing, I didn't want to have to move the boat again.  All in all, a great day on the water with my wife.  Nice sunny sky, breezy and great company.

Till next time
